New York, NY - The women's basketball team got back on the winning track after easily defeating their cross-town, CUNYAC rivals, John Jay by a score of 82-27 earlier this evening. In total, 12 Hawks scored at least two points as the Purple and Gold bolstered their record to 14-5 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
Jade Aponte dropped a game high 22 points on 7-11 shooting from the field which included going 5-8 from down town.
Simone Kheradu came off the bench and chipped in 10 points on an efficient 4-6 effort from the floor which included two triples. Marlena Budna grabbed a game high 10 rebounds on an even split while teammates
Edina Music and
Ashley Arias added eight boards apiece, helping the Hawks to win the rebound battle, 52-29.
Bookmarked by triples from Aponte, the Purple and Gold kicked off the first quarter with an impressive 15-0 run. It was not until the 4:38 mark when the hosts finally got on the board from a three by Dana Nicholson. Holding the Bloodhounds scoreless over the final 3:51, coupled with seven more unanswered points put the Hawks up 25-7.
An 8-0 run to open the second put head coach
John Garrett's squad up by a comfortable 26 point cushion. Keeping John Jay at bay by allowing just four points in the period allowed the Hawks to balloon their lead to 33 heading into the half.
In the final two quarters, the Bloodhounds faired better with 16 total points 14 of which came in the final 10 minutes, but the Hawks offensive onslaught continued as they did not take their foot off the offensive pedal. When all was said and done, they secured their 14th win of the year by a margin of 55 points; their third largest win of the year so far. In their previous meeting, Hunter beat John Jay by 61 points.
Up next, the Hawks will host the Cougars of Medgar Evers College in a CUNYAC contest this Saturday, January 27. Tip-off is slated for a 1pm start.
