Three Hawks Record Double-Doubles to Lead Men's Basketball Past CCNY

Keener Leads the Team With 19 Points

New York, N.Y. - Hunter College men's basketball earned its fourth CUNYAC win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating The City College of New York with a score of 76-61 at Nat Holman Gymnasium.

The Hawks improved to 6-5 overall this season and continues to be undefeated in the conference with a record of 4-0.

The Purple and Gold out-shot and out-rebounded the Beavers, overcoming a five-point deficit in the first half. 

The score stayed closed in the first 20 minutes with the Hawks leading by five points thanks to a jumper from Matt Franks at the 10:35 minute mark. CCNY responded by going on a run, hitting three-straight shots from behind the arc to take a 27-24 lead. George Keener converted on a layup for the Hawks but the Beavers hit two more three-pointers in just 40 seconds for a five-point advantage.

Danny Fusco scored on Hunter's next possession and then Matt Stroud hit a three to tie the score and spark a 6-2 run for the Hawks to close out the first half. Hunter led 39-35 at halftime.

Keener opened up the second by hitting a three-point shot, but the lead continued to change back-and-forth throughout the half. At the 9:15 minute mark, while Hunter trailed by one point, Franks scored off a jumper and the Hawks never looked back. The Purple and Gold finished off the Beavers by out-scoring them 21-5 in the remaining nine minutes of the game to win, 76-61.

The Hawks shot 46.2 percent from the floor as Keener led the team by posting a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Franks and Amer Lukac also contributed double-doubles with Franks recording 15 points and 10 boards and Lukac adding 14 points and 11 boards. Franks added six assists and Fusco chipped in another 15 points for Hunter.

The team returns to action on Friday, Jan. 6 when they host Wheelock College at 2 p.m.
