Aponte and Leung Lead The Way In Victory Over Dolphins

New York, N.Y. - Hunter College women's basketball got its tenth win of the season on Friday night after defeating the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 72-60.

With the victory the Hawks improved to 9-3 this season, while the Dolphins dropped to 5-6.

The Hawks earned 18 points off turnovers, forcing 21 for CMSV, and recording 12 steals in the win.

Hunter's Christine Patterson put the first points of the game on the board and the Hawks did not look back, leading the Dolphins for the rest of the game. The Hawks held the Dolphins from scoring until the 5:34 minute mark in the first quarter, where they hit two free throws to make the score 13-2. The Purple and Gold closed out the first quarter with a 22-10 lead.

The Hawks struggled to find points at the beginning of the second until Theresa Leung hit back-to-back three-pointers with 6:38 on the clock. From there Jade Aponte hit a shot from behind the arc just 30 seconds later and Leung scored another on the next possesson. Aponte topped off the Hunter's outside shooting run with another three 20 seconds later to put the Hawks up by 23 points.

Ashley Arias, Marlena Budna and Leung finished off the second quarter with points to give Hunter the 45-21 edge at halftime.

The Dolphins had a successful third quarter, cutting Hunter's lead to just 11 points going into the fourth. In the last 10 minutes of the game the Hawks made sure to seal the victory, scoring 19 points to Mount Saint Vincent's four points in five minutes. The Hawks held on in the remaining time to win 72-60.

Aponte led the team with 23 points, while Leung followed with 19, each tallying five three-pointers. Leung added a game-high seven assists, while Patterson recorded a team-high seven rebounds.

The Hawks return to action on January 9 when they host York College at 5 p.m.
