Hoboken, N.J. - Hunter College women's volleyball got an exciting win on Wednesday night when they defeated the Stevens Institute of Technology in five close sets (25-15, 13-25, 26-24, 17-25, 15-13) to get their first win over the Ducks in seven seasons.
The win gave the Hawks their 19th of the year to improve to 19-6, while the Ducks are now 20-7 overall.
Hunter started off the match with a commanding 25-15 victory in the first set as
Taylor Haiduk led the offense with six kills to start the day. The Purple and Gold fell behind in the second set, but were able to get within two points before Stevens took control by scoring the last 10 points of the set for a 25-13 win.
The Hawks bounced back in a close third set that featured seven tied scores. Trailing by one point with a score of 19-18, the Hawks found kills from
Isabelle Lawrence,
Emily Wasson and
Kylie Hurst to take a 22-19 advantage. The Ducks responded with five-straight points to take back the lead, but the Hawks went on a 4-0 run as
Marlena Budna got the set-winning kill to lead Hunter to a 26-24 victory and allow them to lead the match 2-1.
Stevens would not go away easy, staying with the Purple and Gold for the entirety of the fourth set and then scoring the last seven points to get a 25-17 win to send the match into the fifth.
The Hawks got the early lead in the final set with kills from
Haley Trunkett and Hurst, as well as a block from Budna and Hurst. The Ducks tied the score at eight before Haiduk recorded a kill to make the score 9-8 Hunter. A Hawk error tied the score again, but Lawrence and Haiduk tallied two-straight points for the Hunter advantage. With the score tied for the third time, Wasson notched a kill and Trunkett earned a service ace, but the Ducks stayed competitive, answering with a kill of their own. On match point, Budna came up with the big play for the Hawks, blocking a Stevens attack attempt to help them win 15-13 and take the match, 3-2.
Wasson ended the match with a team-high 13 kills, while Haiduk followed with 12, committing just one error for a .367 hitting percentage. Hurst and Budna each added 11 kills of their own.
The team's 56 kills were paced by the efforts of
