Flushing, N.Y. - Hunter College women's tennis earned a 5-0 win over the College of Staten Island on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Dolphins in the first round of the CUNYACÂ Championship tournament.
Hunter earned a #3 seed in the tournament after finishing regular-season with a 4-2 record.
The Hawks started the match by sweeping the competition in doubles play, led by the efforts of
Maria Kogarova and
Luisa Sujan at the #1 spot, who won their match 8-3. The duos of
Monika Zaboklicki/
Yana Rabkova and
Liliko Chung/
Elaine Zhang finished up their matches with victories as well to give Hunter the advantage going into singles.
The Purple and Gold managed to get to five points first as Chung took her match at the #5 court, 6-0 and 6-0, while
Catherine Ng registered a win at #6 singles with scores of 6-0, 6-0.
"I'm proud of how our team persevered in the tough and windy playing conditions today," said head coach
Alex Trezos. "Our solid doubles play was the key to the win as it has been all season. We plan to hit the practice courts hard tomorrow to prepare for Tuesday's semifinals."
The team will return to action for the next round on Tuesday, October 23 when they face #2 seeded John Jay College at 3 p.m.
