Flushing, N.Y. - Hunter College women's tennis defeated John Jay College on Tuesday evening with a score of 5-0 to advance to the 2018 CUNYAC Championships on Friday.
The Hawks will play in the finals for the first time since the 2015 season, where they fell to Baruch. The #3 seeded Hawks took down the #2 ranked John Jay this evening, despite falling to the Bloodhounds earlier in the season, 7-2.
The Purple and Gold earned a 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play, led by performances from
Maria Kogarova and
Luisa Sujan, who got an 8-2 win.
The victory was clinched in singles competition by
Liliko Chung and Sujan, who won their matches 6-0, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively.
"It took a total team effort to beat the defending champs," said head coach
Alex Trezos. "I could not be prouder of the team and how they have come together this year. They deserve to be in the finals against a strong Brooklyn College team. We will have to play our best tennis of the season on Friday."
The Hawks face #1 Brooklyn on Friday, starting at 3 p.m. at USTA Tennis Center.
