New York, N.Y. - Hunter College women's volleyball snapped a three-match losing streak on Thursday night, bouncing back to get a commanding 3-0 win over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-14.
The Hawks improved to 13-5 this season, while the Bears dropped to 14-6.
The Purple and Gold started the match in dominating fashion, taking a 10-3 lead that featured kills from
Kendra Moore and
Kylie Hurst, as well as two service aces from libero
Haley Trunkett. Coast Guard began to climb their way back to trail by just three points, but Hunter outscored them 6-2 in the final points to win the first 25-18.
Emily Wasson got a kill to give the Hawks the first point of the second set. The team followed that up with kills from
Taylor Haiduk and Moore, while
Miranda Hogan registered a service ace to help Hunter to 4-0 start. With CGA behind by just two points, the Hawks went on a 9-1 run to make the score 16-6 and cause a Coast Guard timeout. Hunter began to struggle, allowing the Bears to outscore them 7-2, but the Hawks regained composure by recording the last three points of the set to take it 25-16.
The Bears took their first lead of the match in the third set, taking a 5-4 advantage over the Purple and Gold. After a few CGA errors, Hunter's Hurst and
Marlena Budna took control, combining for six of Hunter's next seven points to give the Hawks a 14-7 edge. Hunter remained dominant as back-to-back kills from Haiduk and Budna gave the Hawks the 25-14 decision and the 3-0 sweep.
Budna led the squad with 10 kills and no errors for a team-high .625 hitting percentage. She added four blocks to lead the Hawks.
Haiduk followed with six kills and 10 digs, while Hogan chipped in 25 assists in the victory. Trunkett paced the defense with 13 digs and five service aces.
The team returns to action on Monday, October 8 for a CUNYACÂ tri-match at the Sportsplex.
