New York, N.Y. - Hunter College women's basketball took home a win on Friday night, defeating St. Joseph's College of Long Island with a score of 84-65 in the first round of the annual Hunter Tip-Off Tournament.
The Hawks improved to 1-1 this season and earned their first victory of 2018-19.
Four players scored in double-figures, led by the efforts of
Jade Aponte, who tallied 28 points in her second game of the year.
The Hawks managed a lead early on, ending the first quarter with a 25-12 advantage, thanks to nine points from Aponte. The Purple and Gold maintained control into the second quarter, finding points from Aponte,
Phoebe Valenton,
Janine Conway,
Nicole Ballin and
Selina Lim to go into halftime with a 45-26 lead.
The Golden Eagles went on a small run in the third to trail by just 13 points, but the Hawks found six more points over a 45 second span to keep a solid edge. The Hawks closed it out in the fourth quarter, going up by as much as 24 points and finishing the game with a 84-65 win.
Aponte totaled 28 points to lead the team, knocking down four of six shots from behind the arc. Valenton recorded a career high in the victory, posting 17 points and a team-high eight steals. Conway added 12 points in the win, while
Ashley Arias was just shy of a double-double, registering 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Hawks return to the court tomorrow when they take on Denison University in the championship game, starting at 2 p.m.
