New York, N.Y. - Hunter College women's basketball fell in the championship game of the Hunter Tip Off tournament to Denison University on Saturday afternoon with a score of 100-74.
Despite a combined 43 points from
Jade Aponte and
Janine Conway, the Hawks were unable to keep up with the Big Red, dropping to 1-2 so far this season.
Denison led early as Denison's Valesha Province scored three-straight three-pointers in the first 1:10 to give them the 9-0 edge over the Hawks. Hunter quickly found their way back into the game, trailing by just two points at the end of the first quarter. A basket from behind the arc from Conway helped the Hawks get within one points, but the Big Red stayed out of reach, outscoring the Hawks 30-11 in the final seven minutes to lead 54-34 at the half.
The Purple and Gold would not get closer than 16 points in the next two quarters, eventually falling 100-73.
Aponte had another 20-point game, recording 25 in the loss, while Conway finished with 18 to lead the team.
Ashley Arias added 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 20 when they host Western Connecticut State at 5 p.m.
