Four Players Score In Double-Figures to Lift Men's Basketball Over Elms

George Keener Leads the Hawks in Points

Newark, N.J. - Hunter College men's basketball improved to 2-1 this season with an 81-64 victory over Elms College on Sunday in the second game of the Rutgers-Newark tournament.

Four players scored in double-figures as George Keener led the team with 17 points. Keener was named to the All-Tournament team for his performances on the weekend.

The Hawks took the first lead of the game and never relinquished it, leading by five points at the 10:43 minute mark before Keener hit a layup to spark a 13-0 run. The Hawks went 3-3 from behind the arc over the next minute and a half, finding three-pointers from Gio Gabbidon, Melvin Collins and Hayden Belkin to give Hunter a 26-8 lead. The Purple and Gold went up by as much as 19 points in the first off another basket from Collins, but finished out the half with a 39-26 advantage.

The team stayed in control at the start of the second, but allowed the Blazers to get within 10 points in the first two minutes. From there Gabbidon hit a three as the Hawks outscored Elms 14-4 to go back up by 20 with 14:19 on the clock. The Purple and Gold continued to shoot well, getting back-to-back threes from Collins and Gabbidon, while Danny Fusco hit a shot from behind the arc to give Hunter a 30-point edge. The Hawks finished off the Blazers in the final seven minutes to take the game, 81-64.

Keener finished with 17 points, shooting 7-9 from the field, while Gabbidon followed with 15, adding a team-high five steals. Collins came off the bench to notch a career-high of 14 points, converting on four of his five attempts from behind the three-point line. Fusco rounded out the double-digit scoring by adding 13 points, while dishing out a team-high seven assists. James Blair led the team on the boards, registering 15 rebounds in the victory. 

The squad returns to the court on Tuesday, November 20 when they host SUNY Cobleskill at 7 p.m.
