New York, N.Y. - Hunter College women's basketball took down #5 ranked City College of New York on Sunday afternoon in the first round of the CUNYAC tournament, winning the game with a score of 90-59 at the Hunter Sportsplex.
"It was a great team win for us today with contributions from a variety of players," said head coach
John Garrett. "We were able to stay focused and execute our game plan against a great, well coached team and we're excited to continue the season next Wednesday in the semifinals."
The Hawks improved to 18-8 this season and will face #1 ranked Brooklyn College next Wednesday in the semifinal round.
The Purple and Gold trailed by as much as nine points in the first quarter of the game, overcoming the deficit in the second when they went on a 14-2 run, led by 11 points from
Janine Conway, to take the lead. Hunter finished up the half with a 13 point advantage, going into halftime with a score of 47-34.
Despite the score, the Beavers out-shot the Hawks with a field goal percentage of 50.0 percent, while Hunter tallied a mark of 37.8. Conway led the team in the first 20 minutes with 18 points, recording four three-pointers.
Hunter widened the lead in the third, leading by 25 points with 10 minutes to play. They outscored the Beavers in the final quarter 15-9 to get the 90-59 win and advance in the CUNYACÂ playoffs.
The Hawks finished the win with a 41.3 field goal percentage, recording 18 steals to force 27 Beaver turnovers.
Jade Aponte led the team with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Conway earned 20 points off the bench in the victory.
Maya Thompson registered 11 points and
Theresa Leung took home 10 points and a team-high seven steals.
Marlena Budna tallied eight rebounds, while
Selina Lim added eight points and dished out six assists in the win.
The Hawks will return to the court on Wednesday, February 21Â when they take on Brooklyn at 6 p.m. at CCNY.Â
