Women's Basketball Falls to #1 Brooklyn in the CUNYAC Semifinals

Women's Basketball's CUNYAC Run Ends on Wednesday

New York, N.Y. - Hunter College women's basketball made a comeback in the fourth quarter, but eventually fell to Brooklyn College on Wednesday night in the semifinal round of the CUNYAC tournament with a score of 64-57.

The Hawks were down by as much as 11 points but cut the Bulldog's lead to just two with four minutes to play to make an exciting playoff game. Hunter forced 28 Brooklyn turnovers and held the Bulldogs to a 38.1 field goal percentage, but were unable to get the win in the final minutes.

The Purple and Gold finished the first quarter with an 9-0 run to tie the score at 14 going into the second. In the next ten minutes the Hawks tied the score twice and pulled ahead three different times as Marlena Budna led the team on the boards with four rebounds and four points.

The Hawks went into the locker room at halftime trailing the Bulldogs by just three points, 27-24.

Both teams struggled to score in the opening minutes of the third quarter until Brooklyn went on a 13-3 run to lead by ten. Jade Aponte was the first to score at the beginning of the fourth, recording a steal and fastbreak layup. She followed that up with a three-pointer on Hunter's next possession, while Janine Conway and Christine Patterson combined for six points over the next minute to make Hunter down by just two points.

Trailing by two points with four minutes left in the game, the Hawks failed to convert on shots as Brooklyn pulled back ahead by eight and then managed to hold onto the lead to get the victory, 64-57.

Aponte led the team with 15 points, while Ashley Arias registered 11 points and seven rebounds. Budna added nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.
