Staten Island, N.Y. - Hunter College men's volleyball earned its fifth-straight win on Tuesday evening, defeating the College of Staten Island in four sets with scores of 25-10, 25-11, 24-26 and 25-12. The win gives the Hawks an 8-4 overall record and they improve to 3-0 in conference play.
The Hawks started the first set by scoring seven-straight points, finding kills from
Blake Hogan,
Daniel Kim,
Benjamin Cassidy and
Daniel Dobrogowski. The Dolphins finally got on the board, but Hunter went on a run toward the end as
Cyrus De Guzman recorded a kill and Cassidy tallied a service ace to get the win, 25-10.
The Purple and Gold once again started the second set strong, jumping out to a 12-3 lead. The Hawks got kills from
Sebastian Vargas, Hogan and
Jben Mui to score six-straight points and extend their advantage to 19-8. From there they finished off CSI with a 6-0 run to take the second, 25-11.
The Dolphins got the early edge in the third set before the Hawks managed to pull ahead, 22-19. Five Hunter errors gave CSI the points they needed in the end to win the third by just two points, 26-24.
The Hawks immediately bounced back in the fourth, scoring 11 points to CSI's three off kills from Dobrogowski, Cassidy, Kim and
Alec Helford. They wrapped it up by outscoring the Dolphins 14-9 as Kim got the final kill to top CSI, 25-12 and get the 3-1 victory.
Hunter hit .340 in the win, while holding the Dolphins to a hitting percentage of -.087.
Dobrogowski and Kim each notched 11 kills, with Dobrogowski committing just one error for a .625 hitting percentage.Â
Defense was a team effort for the Purple and Gold as Joe Muir led the Hawks with 13 digs, followed by 11 each from Hogan and Kim. Dobrogowski added a team-high nine blocks in the win, while Helford paced the squad with 29 assists.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday when they host a tri-match against Mount Saint Vincent and Springfield, starting at 10 a.m.
