Brooklyn, NY - Two goals from
Jesus Patino Muniz proved to be enough to push the Hawks (1-0) past the Bears (0-1) during the men's soccer season opener. After taking the early 2-0 lead, Hunter added an insurance goal in the second to secure the 3-1 victory.
It didn't't take long for the Purple and Gold to get going as they began their 2018 campaign. In the ninth minute, newcomer
Blaise Enama capitalized on a defensive miscue by the hosts. After turning the ball over in their defensive end,
William Benitez sent a pass through to find Enama who beat St. Joseph's keeper for the first score of the game.
Just 15 minutes later, the Hawks struck again. On a feed from Blaise, Muniz found the back of the net which ultimately proved to be the game winner. In the 40th minute, the hosts cut the deficit in half on an unassisted goal from Kenneth Garcia, but it would not be enough.
One final insurance goal in the 68th minute put the icing on the cake.
Michael Merlo sent a long pass from midfield to connect with Muniz whose shot once again found the back of the net for his second score of the game.
Hunter's keeper,
Noah Dougherty recorded one save on the day in 90 minutes of action and registered his first win of the year. The Hawks bettered their counterparts on the stat sheet as well, taking three corner kicks to St. Joseph's zero and out-shot them 11-6.
The men's soccer team returns to action tomorrow, Sunday September 2 when they travel to New Jersey City, New Jersey to take on the Gothic Knights of NJCU. First kick is slated for a 2pm start.
