New York, N.Y. - Hunter College got a win on Tuesday night over the United States Merchant Marine Academy, taking down the Mariners in three sets with competitive scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 26-24.
The Hawks won their sixth-straight to improve to 6-0 this season, while the Mariners drop to 2-2.
The first set featured seven tied scores until the Purple and Gold went on a 5-1 run off kills from
Emily Wasson and
Taylor Haiduk to take a 23-21 lead. Wasson finished them off with another kill to give Hunter the 1-0 advantage.
USMMAÂ took an early lead in the second before Hunter managed to blow past them to make the score 10-8. From there the Hawks scored five-straight points, for a 15-10 edge. Hunter began to falter as the Mariners went on a 8-2 run to pull ahead by one point but the Hawks tied the score back up at 23 until an error put them down by one again. The Purple and Gold took the last three points of the set after forcing Mariner errors to get a 26-24 win.
The third set was another close one as both teams struggled to hold onto a lead until USMMAÂ shot out to a 20-13 advantage. Hunter was not deterred, going on a 10-2 streak to jump ahead, 23-22. With the score tied at 23,
Kendra Moore and
Kylie Hurst recorded kills to give the Hawks the 26-24 victory and the sweep of the Mariners.
Offense was a team effort as Hurst, Wasson, Haiduk and
Marlena Budna each tallied eight kills and
Miranda Hogan notched 31 assists.
Haley Trunkett led the defense with 19 digs, with Hurst chipping in 14 of her own. Budna guided the Hawks in blocks, recording five in the win.
The team returns to action on Thursday, September 13 when they host Medgar Evers College at 7 p.m.
