New York, N.Y. - Accurate shooting in the second half helped Hunter College men's basketball to a win over John Jay College on Friday night, defeating the Bloodhounds, 79-72.
The Hawks (4-11, 2-6 CUNYAC) held onto the lead after John Jay (8-7, 3-4 CUNYAC) came back with five minutes to play.
The first half was close, featuring five lead changes until the Bloodhounds managed to hold on to a small advantage for the last six minutes. With 2:18 left, Hunter's
Abraham Rosow scored a three-pointer, while
Gio Gabbidon and
Barrett Lowe each found points to help the Hawks go into halftime trailing by just one point, 33-32.
The Purple and Gold came out in the second half on fire, immediately sinking a three from
Nolan Bruesehoff, sparking a 19-7 run for an 11-point lead.
George Keener and Gabbidon took turns finding baskets, combining for 19 of Hunter's points over a 10 minute span.
Despite the Hunter shooting, the Bloodhounds slowly began their comeback, going up by one point with 4:10 to play.
Danny Fusco and Gabbidon each scored in response to give the Hawks a four-point edge, but John Jay kept it interesting by finding a basket with 44 seconds on the clock. Rosow hit a free throw to lengthen Hunter's lead to three and Fusco confirmed the victory when he stole the ball and scored on John Jay's next possession. The Hawks closed out the win with a score of 79-72.
Keener and Gabbidon led the Hawks in the game as Keener posted an impressive double-double of 26 points and 15 rebounds. Gabbidon shot 8-for-9 from the floor for 22 points in the victory. Fusco added nine points and six assists.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, January 16 when they host Medgar Evers at 7 p.m.
