New York, N.Y. - Hunter College men's basketball forced overtime in the last minute of regulation on Friday night against Brooklyn College, eventually falling to the Bulldogs, 73-71.
The Hawks are now 4-15 overall and 2-9 in CUNYAC, while Brooklyn improves to 12-7, 7-3.
Things did not look great for the Hawks, who fell behind by as much as 13 points in the first half and went into halftime down 10, 36-26. After falling behind by 15 with 17 minutes left to play in the second, the Purple and Gold found their stride, slowly cutting Brooklyn's lead to just ten with 9:54 on the clock.
From there the Hawks scored six points from
Abraham Rosow,
Danny Fusco and
George Keener to trail by seven. With 6:37 to play,
Danny Fusco found
Hayden Belkin in the paint, who hit a layup and drew the foul. Belkin converted on the three-point play to help the Hawks cut the Bulldogs' lead to four points. Fusco scored a layup and a three-pointer in just 30 seconds to give Hunter the one-point advantage, but the Bulldogs responded with another shot to pull ahead.
Keener, Fusco and
Nolan Bruesehoff all made shots in the final three minutes, but the Hawks still found themselves down by one point until
Gio Gabbidon converted on a free throw with 17 seconds to play, sending the game into overtime.
The beginning of overtime featured three lead changes and two tied scores. With the Bulldogs leading by two on Hunter's last possession, the Hawks were unable to make a shot, unfortunately allowing them to fall to Brooklyn, 73-71.
Keener led the team in points for the sixth-straight game, notching 19 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Fusco followed with 16 points, dishing out five assists in the loss. Gabbidon followed with 13 points and Bruesehoff added 10.
The team returns to action on Jan. 30 when they host Connecticut College at 7:30 p.m.
