Rochester, NY - The men's basketball team slipped to 0-2 on the season after falling to Nazareth, 97-69, in the first day of the Mike Daley Memorial Tournament. Hunter looks for their first win tomorrow when they play Vassar in the consolation round.
The Purple and Gold had three achieve scoring double figures with
George Keener and
Danny Fusco each tallying 15 points apiece.
Gio Gabbidon rounded out the scoring three with 13 points. The trio also accounted for 16 of the team's 18 made free throws. They put together a team effort resulting in shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc (9-18) and finished the game with a 42.9 percent shooting performance from the floor.
Hunter fell behind from the get-go but crawled back to within one point early on. However, with the clock showing 10:48, they faced a 10 point deficit and managed to get as close as within eight points thanks to back-to-back triples from Keener and
Jared Brown. At the end of the first half, the hosts enjoyed a 15 point lead courtesy of a Zach Stenglein jumper with time expiring.
Ten second half Hunter turnovers, coupled with hot shooting from Nazareth led to the growing deficit that ballooned to as much as 37 at one point. Despite
John Pelin's squad scoring three more points in the second half compared to the first, and shooting a respectable 40 percent from the field, they had no answer for the offensive output of the Golden Flyers.
The team will play tomorrow at 1pm and will square off against Vassar, who lost to SUNY Fredonia, at 1pm in the consolation round.
