The Hawks had five score at least 10 points

New York, NY - In front of the Homecoming crowd, the women's basketball team played host to their longtime, downtown rivals, Baruch College, earlier this evening. The Hawks had five players in double digit scoring on the evening which led to an 87-52 victory. The win levels out the team's record to 4-4 overall while they improve to 2-0 in CUNYAC action.

Phoebe Valenton led the Purple and Gold with 17 points while Janine Conway and Maya Thompson chipped in with 15 points apiece. Theresa Leung added 14 points while Nicole Ballin rounded out the fifth scorer in double figures with 10. Offensively, the Hawks show an impressive 47.8 percent from the floor and 40 percent from deep. They were equally as impressive on the defensive end of the court, out-rebounding their opponents 28-33, tallying 18 steals, forcing 26 turnovers and registering three blocks.

In the first quarter, the Hawks wasted no time getting on the board and shot the lights out of the basket, posting a 58.8 shooting percentage from the floor and leading from the first basket. An 11-5 Hunter run in the opening 3:46 set the tone for the rest of the game. Valenton knocked down a triple with 42 seconds left in the quarter to give her team a 27-15 lead heading into the second.

Hunter unleashed a crippling 14-2 run, bookended by Thompson's two points to start and end the run, putting her team up 47-23. Head Coach John Garrett's squad held the Bearcats to just 11 points in the second and enjoyed a 23 point cushion heading into the half.

In the third, despite Baruch having their best quarter with total points, 16, and shooting 53.8 percent from the floor, Hunter countered with a 25 point quarter on 10-19 shooting. They closed the last 1:47 of the quarter with 10 unanswered points, capped by a layup from Ballin to go up by 32. Over the final 10 minutes, the Hawks kept their foot on the gas and improved their lead to as much as 37 points at one point. Hunter's final points came on a three pointer from Isabella Santos.

The women's basketball team is back in action on Wednesday, December 11 when they host the Violets of NYU in a non-conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for a 5pm start.
