New York, N.Y. - Hunter College men's volleyball got its second win of the year on Wednesday night, taking down Misericordia University in three sets with scores of 25-14, 25-20 and 25-22.
The Hawks are now 2-3 this season, while the Cougars drop to 6-3.
Hunter shot out to a 10-4 lead in the first set, then found a kill from
Cyrus De Guzman to make the score 11-6. The Hawks went on a run with
Jben Mui,
Michael Jazgarski and
Blake Hogan each recording kills and
Samuel Gibson tallying two-straight service aces to continue the lead. Hunter closed out the first by outscoring the Cougars 7-3 to win the set, 25-14.
The Purple and Gold managed the first four points of the second off serves from
Alec Helford, and then took a 7-2 advantage over the Cougars. MU went on a 7-2 run to tie the score at nine, but Hogan stopped the streak by getting a kill for the Hawks.
Qendrim Shala contributed two kills as the Hawks scored six of the next eight points to take a 19-14 lead. Jazgarski got the deciding kill to give Hunter the 25-20 win and the 2-0 lead in the match.
The Hawks once again got the early edge in the third set, posting five kills to make the score 10-6. Misericordia tied it up, 16-16, but then committed two errors to allow the Hawks to pull ahead. The points went back-and-forth but the Hawks held onto the advantage, taking the set 25-22 off a kill from Jazgarski.
Hogan led with 12 kills and just one error for a .440 hitting percentage, while Shala followed with 10 kills and seven digs in the win. Helford recorded 35 assists, while
Chris Scandole led the defense with 10 digs.
The squad returns to the court on Saturday, February 9 when they host a tri-match at the Sportsplex.
