Edgewater, NJ - The men's tennis team opened their 2019 campaign earlier this afternoon with a non-conference match against the Macabees of Yeshiva University at the Binghamton Racquet Club. The Purple and Gold were blanked in the three doubles matches and were only able to snag one victory in singles to fall 8-1. They slip to 0-1 on the year while Yeshiva advances to 4-3.
The duo of
Nasser Ghaffar and
Matthew Solovey were downed 8-1 at top flight doubles while
Omer Khalifa and
Ryan Hwang suffered the same fate at second doubles.
Kyle Burrus and
Nicholas Caicedo put up a good fight but found themselves on the short end of the 8-4 score.
Five and six singles were the first to be completed with
Rhodondo Jeraman falling to Alexander Kalb, 0-6, 1-6 and
Noah Dougherty succumbing to his opponent, Samuel Edery by a similar score, 1-6, 0-6.
Jose Agregado played at second singles but fell to Aaron Cohen by identical scores of 6-2 while Ghaffar's top flight singles performance ended in a 1-6, 4-6 loss to Mikey Ozery.
Solovey was unable to get by Yeshiva's Lior Brik, falling 3-6 and 2-6 at third singles. Khalifa saved the Purple and Gold from a shutout after edging Avidan Rudansky in a tight two-set victory in No. 4 singles. He won the opener by the difference of just one service break and sealed the victory in a second-set tiebreak, 6-4, 7-6.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, March 16 when they travel to Kings Point, NY to take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy. First serve is slated for a 12pm start.
