Newark, N.J. - Hunter College men's volleyball went 1-1 on Saturday in a non-conference tri-match, hosted by Rutgers-Newark. The Hawks defeated Marymount University in three sets before falling to the Scarlet Raiders.
The Hawks are now 10-4 overall this season, while maintaining a mark of 2-0 in the CUNYAC.
Hunter 3, Marymount 0
The Hawks started the day with a sweep over the Saints with scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-20.
The beginning of the first set featured three lead changes until the Hawks found five-straight points to take a 13-9 lead. Marymount was unable to close the gap for the rest of the set as Hunter took it 25-21.
Michael Jazgarski recorded the first kill of the second to help the Purple and Gold jump out to an early 10-4 edge. The Saint began to catch up towards the end, recording two points to trail by just one, 23-22, but Hunter closed out the last two points for a 25-23 win.
The Hawks once again found themselves with the early advantage in the third set, 12-5, until the Saints got back into the game to trail by just one. Jazgarski and
Jben Mui responded with kills to put the Hawks back up, 22-18. They finished it off with the last three points, including the deciding kill from
Qendrim Shala to take the match in three.
Jazgarski registered a team-high eight kills, followed by Shala's six.
Chris Scandole led the team on defense with eight digs, while
Alec Helford posted 20 assists in the victory.
Rutgers-Newark 3, Hunter 1
Hunter ended the day by getting just their fourth loss of the season, dropping the match in four sets to the Raiders that featured scores of 25-13, 21-25, 25-23 and 25-19.
The Purple and Gold struggled offensively, earning a hitting percentage of .078, while Rutgers-Newark posted a mark of .246. The team was stopped by the Raider's defense, which recorded 26 blocks in the match.
Shala led the Hawks with 22 kills for a new career-high. He added ten digs, while Scandole recorded a team-high 14 digs in the loss. Helford added 43 assists to finish off the tri-match.
The squad returns to the court on Tuesday, March 5 when they host Fontbonne University at 6 p.m.
