Men's Volleyball Clinches Regular Season Championship With Win Over Lehman

This is the Third-Straight Regular Season Win For the Hawks

Bronx, N.Y. - Hunter College men's volleyball got a win over Lehman College on Tuesday night to secure the 2019 regular season CUNYAC Championship. The Hawks defeated the Lightning in three sets with scores of 25-8, 25-12 and 25-14.

They finish regular-season conference play with a perfect 7-0 record.

The Purple and Gold started the first set with 13-2 run. A Hunter service error gave the Lightning another point, but the Hawks went on to score seven-straight points. Hunter finished off the first with a kill from Jben Mui and a service ace from Sebastian Vargas to take it, 25-8.

Lehman took the early advantage in the second until Hunter scored nine-straight, featuring kills from Samuel Gibson and Wilbur Williams for a 10-3 lead. Back-to-back kills from Gibson helped the Hawks stay in control, but another kill from Williams sparked a run for the Hawks as they took a 23-10 edge and then finished them off 25-12.

Hunter took an 11-5 lead in the third and then allowed the Lightning to come within four points before Christian Maisonet scored two-straight kills and Sherrod Cole found a service ace to keep the Hawks in the lead. The Purple and Gold scored four of the last five points of the set to win it, 25-14 and take the match.

Hunter hit .352 in the win, while holding the Lightning to a hitting percentage of -.065.

Maisonet led the team with seven kills and no errors in the win. Qendrim Shala and Gibson followed with six kills each. David Lou earned a team-high nine digs and Vargas posted 25 assists in the match.

The team returns to action on Saturday, April 6 when they host UC - Santa Cruz and St. John Fisher College in a tri-match.
