Kings Point, N.Y. - Hunter College women's volleyball found its second win of the season on Tuesday night, defeating the United States Merchant Marine Academy in a tough five sets with scores of 25-13, 22-25, 25-27, 25-23 and 15-10.
The Hawks improved to 2-3 overall this season, while the Mariners also settled at a 2-3 record.
The first set featured a momentous run from Hunter as the Purple and Gold finished off the set by outscoring them 13-3 to get a dominating victory.
USMMA bounced back in the second to lead for most of the set. A late comeback that featured points from
Rodica Nedea and
Kylie Hurst fell just short as the Mariners tied up the match 1-1.
A competitive third set consisted of 14 tied scores and seven lead changes. With the score tied at 24, USMMA managed to ink out the last two points off a kill and a Hunter error to win it, 27-25 and take control of the match.
The fourth set showed off Hunter's ability to never quit, coming from behind to get the win. The Hawks trailed for the majority of the set, falling behind by three points towards the end. From there Hunter went on a 6-1 run, sparked by a kill from Hurst. The Mariners scored again to go up, 23-20, but kills from
Isabelle Lawrence and
Sunghee Cho helped them trail by just one. Two-straight service aces from Hurst and a deciding kill from Lawrence finished off the Mariners, 25-23 to send it into the fifth set.
Hunter took a solid 7-2 lead in the fifth before USMMAÂ managed to get within one point. The Purple and Gold did not let up as
Kendra Moore got the kill to solidify a 15-10 win and 3-2 match victory.
Hurst led the team with 17 kills, while Nedea recorded 11 in the win. Moore added nine kills, followed by eight from
Mariam Ouattara and seven from Lawrence. Ouattara and Moore also posted six blocks each.
Justine Smith found a team-high 40 assists, while adding 14 digs and three services aces to her stat line. Cho continued to be a force on defense, notching 27 digs, and
Summer Magliochetti helped out with 14 digs of her own.
The squad returns to action on Thursday when they host New Paltz at 6 p.m. at the Sportsplex.
