Flushing, NY – The women's tennis team earned their first home and conference victory of the season yesterday after defeating Brooklyn College by a score of 6-3 in a rematch of last year's championship. The win improves their record to 3-0 and 1-0 in CUNYAC play.
The Purple and Gold won two of the three doubles portion of the match.
Zaara Afida and
Malgorzata Kuczera teamed up at top flight but fell to their opponents, 8-5. Meanwhile,
Monika Zaboklicki and
Maryna Bohdanovska blanked the Bulldog duo at second doubles, 8-0. Closing out the doubles portion,
Elaine Zhang and
Ksenia Zevyakina won 8-1, giving the Hawks a 2-1 advantage heading into singles action.
Afida was downed by her Brooklyn opponent 6-2, 7-5 at top flight singles while Kuczera had a tough fought battle with her counterpart at #2 singles; she split the first two sets, 6-2 and 7-5 but then dropped a long third, 13-11. However, Zhang and
Bernice Shi blanked their Brooklyn competitors in straight sets at #5 and #6 singles respectively while Zaboklicki nearly did the same but dropped one set to secure the victory at #4 singles. Rounding out the final win was
Liliko Chung who won 6-2, 6-4 at #3 singles.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, September 21 when they host the Bloodhounds of John Jay College at the USTA National Tennis Center at noon.
