New York, N.Y. - Hunter College women's volleyball improved to 4-0 in conference play on Tuesday after defeating York College in three sets (25-6, 25-5, 25-14) at the Hunter Sportsplex.
The Hawks evened out to 6-6 overall, while the Cardinals dropped to 3-6 and 1-2 in the CUNYAC.
Hunter's .459 hitting percentage led the way in the match as the Hawks held the Cardinals to a mark of -.045. The Hawks had 10 players record at least one kill in the victory.
The Purple and Gold's longest run of the first set came off seven-straight serves from
Curran Murray, as kills from Murray,
Kendra Moore,
Kylie Hurst,
Summer Magliochetti and
Isabelle Lawrence helped the Hawks outscore York, 15-2 to win the set, 25-6.
Hunter had a dominating start to the second set when
Justine Smith posted four service aces in the first five points of the game. A York attack error sparked a 14-1 run for the Hawks, featuring nine-straight serves from
Alexa Sayson and kills from
Rodica Nedea and Lawrence, to put Hunter up 16-1. Points scored from
Mariam Ouattara, Moore, Sayson and Nedea closed out the set with the Hawks on top, 25-5.
It would be later in the third set before the Purple and Gold would catch a significant lead, going on a 9-3 run to make the score 21-11.
Pearl Mensah recorded the last two points of the match off kills to confirm the 25-14 win and three-set victory for Hunter.
Lawrence and Ouattara led the team with eight kills each, while Moore followed with six kills and zero errors for a team-high .667 hitting percentage. Magliochetti registered a team-high 14 assists, while
Sunghee Cho led the defense with nine digs.
The squad returns to the court on Thursday, September 26 when they travel to Stockton University for a 7 p.m. match.
