Bronx, NY – The men's basketball team dug in and came away with a hard fought 55-51 victory over CUNYAC foe Lehman College last night. The win puts them at 2-12 overall and moves them to 2-3 in conference action.
The Hawks had most of their offensive damage come from
George Keener,
Jonah Bevacqua and
Judah McIntyre. Keener pulled down nine boards and led the team with 15 points while Bevacqua registered his third consecutive double-double with 10 rebounds and 14 points. McIntyre was efficient from all over the floor, shooting 3-4 from the field, knocking down his one and only three point attempt, and draining five of six from the charity stripe for 12 points.
In a half that featured eight lead changes and five ties, each team played one another fairly even. Hunter's largest lead of the half was four while Lehman's greatest advantage was five which came toward the final seconds of the half. Despite the Hawks trailing much of the initial 20 minutes, four straight points from the hosts set them back 26-21 at the half.
Hunter took their first lead in the second half after
Melvin Collins drilled a three pointer at the 15:06 mark, but it was short lived after Lehman responded with a layup from Tommy Batista put the lightning back on top. The Hawks responded and took a seven point lead, their largest of the game, but it was erased with 5:07 showing. The Purple and Gold held the hosts scoreless over the final five minutes while Keener and McIntyre each hit both of their free throw attempts to seal the deal on the victory.
Hunter returns to action on Wednesday, January 15 when they host CCNY at 7pm.
