Men's Hoops Wins Second Straight; Defeats CCNY, 85-58

Melvin Collins notched a career high 17 points in the win.

New York, NY – The men's basketball earned their second straight win earlier this evening after toppling CCNY by a score of 85-58. The Hawks used a balanced scoring attack and had four in double figures as they cruised to their third win of the season.

Melvin Collins came off the bench and went 7-10 from the field including a 3-5 performance from downtown to lead the Hawks with 17 points; a new career high for the senior guard. Teammate George Keener add 16 points and six boards while Danny Fusco and Gio Gabbidon had an even split of 22 points.

As a team, the Hawks (3-12, 3-3 CUNYAC) drilled a season high 11 three pointers and dished out 20 assists. They were also on point from the floor, shooting 53.3 percent from the field and 45.8 percent from behind the arc and crashed the boards on defense, out-rebounding the Beavers, 36-31.

There were eight lead changes during the first half until Jared Brown knocked down a three pointer at the 8:04 mark. It sparked an 8-0 run to put the Hawks in the lead by seven. Back-to-back layups from Collins and Fusco to close the half gave the Purple and Gold a 10 point cushion heading into halftime.

In the second, they did not relinquish the lead and stayed ahead by double figures the entire way. A jumper from Jonah Bevacqua put his team up by 20 and then Daouda Berete made good on a layup to make it a 24 point game at 74-50 with just under six minutes left to play. Ryan Lau put the icing on the cake with a deuce, capping the 85-58 victory.

The men's basketball team is back in action on Friday, January 17 when they travel across town to take on the Bloodhounds of John Jay in a conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for an 8pm start.
