New York, NY – Despite four in double figures, and a strong collective defensive effort, the women's basketball team came up just shy over the final minutes of a close game and fell to John Jay, 83-80.
Janine Conway lead all scorers in the game with a 25 point effort while teammate
Theresa Leung chipped in with 17 points. The duo of
Kristina Krslovic and
Brooke DeGiulio had an even split of 20 points and eight rebounds and were an efficient 7-13 from the field combine while accounting for five of the team's nine triples. The Hawks recorded 16 steals and one block and forced an impressive 27 John Jay turnovers.
Hunter (9-7, 4-2 CUNAC) fell behind in the early stages after going cold from the floor and found themselves in an eight point hole. They bounced back and closed the last 3:32 of the first quarter with a 17-3 run and held a six point lead heading into the second.
Their lead grew to as much as seven on two occasions, but they managed just one point within the last three minutes while the host knocked down each of their six free throw attempts to make it a 41-39 affair heading into the half.
The Purple and Gold once again came out strong in the quarter, building a 10 point lead on three separate occasions, but the hosts did not go away easily. John Jay used eight unanswered points to get right back into it late in the quarter to close the gap to just two points.
There were five ties in the final 10 minutes of the game, proving how evenly each side played. With 2:07 remaining, the scoreboard was knotted at 77 apiece. The Bloodhounds made good on their attempts from the charity stripe on back to back occasions while the Hawks missed on three consecutive tries from the floor until
Kimberly Lau made a big layup with 14 seconds left to keep it within reach. With three seconds left Conway made the first of her two free throw attempts after being fouled but All'aha Albright matched her on the ensuing possession. A final three point attempt from Lau was off the mark as the final buzzer sounded in favor of John Jay.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, January 22 when they travel to Brooklyn to take on Medgar Evers College. Tip-off is at 6pm.
