Kings Points, NY – On Friday evening, the women's basketball team fell to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on the road in a non-conference contest. Despite leading by two at the half, the squad was unable to hold on to the lead and wound up falling by a score of 61-48. With the loss, the Hawk's record moves to 10-8 overall and holds at 6-2 in CUNYAC action.
Janine Conway led the way for the Purple and Gold with 15 points, seven of which came from the charity stripe.
Kristina Krslovic netted nine points and five boards while
Phoebe Valenton and
Theresa Leung had an even split of a combined 16 points in the loss.
The Hawks used the three point line early which accounted for nine of their 13 first quarter points. Despite falling behind by five in the early minutes of the game, they fired back with back-to-back triples from Leung and Krslovic.
Kimberly Lau also knocked in a shot from downtown to tie the game at 11. With the second quarter played in similar fashion to the first, the teams found themselves knotted at 22 apiece until Valenton and Conway hit a free throw each to give them a 24-22 lead heading into halftime.
The Purple and Gold struggled in the third, missing on their first five shots and falling behind by as much as 11 points with just over two minutes left to play in the quarter. Their struggles put them in a hole which they were unable to climb out of. Hunter fell behind by as much as 13 points at their largest deficit in the fourth. Although they were able to cut it down to six, it would be as close as they would get. USMMA knocked down seven of their final eight attempts from the foul line to hold on for their victory.
