Women’s Basketball rolls past York College 78-55

The Hawks high pressure defense leads to seventh conference win

New York, NY – The women's basketball team came up with a big win on Tuesday over York College and secured their 11th victory of the season. The Hawks 78-55 victory marked their seventh win in conference play as the team looks to capture a top seed in the CUNYAC tournament.

There were three Hunter (11-8, 7-2 CUNYAC) players who scored in the double figures, led by Janine Conway with 27 points to go along with five rebounds. Theresa Leung's 13 point effort came by way of an efficient 5-8 shooting performance. Phoebe Valenton continued her strong play in her senior season posting 16 points while shooting 4-9 from three point range. Kristina Krslovic held down the defensive end leading the Purple and gold with nine rebounds and a career high four blocked shots.

The Hawks played some of their best defense of the season holding York to 30.2 percent from the field while forcing York into 29 turnovers. The Hawks turned those turnovers into 32 points. On the offensive end of the court, Hunter shot 40 percent from the field while making six threes and shot an accurate 87.5 percent from the charity stripe.

The Cardinal's took the lead with the first basket of the game but after a three pointer by Conway to make it 5-2 the Hawks would never trail. Hunter used two separate 10-0 runs to make it a 23-7 affair after one quarter. The Purple and Gold would extend their lead to as many as 22 in the second quarter but a 12-2 run to end the half kept the game close. Heading into halftime, Hunter found themselves up by a score of 39-28.

Despite York scoring the first basket of the second half and cutting the lead to single digits, Hunter was never threatened. The Hawks used a 12 point run, capped by a Valenton three, to push the lead to 21. The Hawks held a 17 point lead heading into the 4th quarter. Krslovic ended the scoring, dropping in a layup to bring the score to 78-55.

Up next, the Hawks return to action on Friday, January 31st when they face the conference leading Bulldogs of Brooklyn College in a road contest. The Hawks will look to avenge their 63-67 loss to Brooklyn earlier this month. Tip-off is set for 5pm.
