New York, NY – The men's basketball team came up with a big win on Tuesday over York College and secured their sixth victory of the season. The Hawks 75-52 victory marked their fifth win in the last six games as the team looks poised for a strong finish to the season.
There were four Hunter (6-13, 5-4 CUNYAC) players who scored in the double figures, led by
Gio Gabbidon with 15 points on only seven shots.
George Keener's 12 point effort came by way of an efficient 5-9 shooting performance.
Jonah Bevacqua continued his strong play this calendar year posting 13 points while shooting 3-4 from three point range. Melvin Colin's continued to be a spark off the bench as the senior scored 12 points in only 17 minutes of play.
The Purple and Gold played some of their best defense of the season holding York to 32.8 percent from the field while forcing York into 17 turnovers. The Cardinals were held to 1-13 from three point land during the contest. On the offensive end of the court, Hunter shot 41.7 percent from downtown sinking 10 threes and shot an accurate 15-18 from the charity stripe.
The Hawk's took the lead with the first basket of the game by Keener and would never trail. Hunter began the game on an 11-2 run and quickly followed that up with another 12-2 run to make it a 30-10 affair. The Purple and Gold led by as many as 25 in the first half when
Danny Fusco hit a three with 1:18 left. Heading into halftime, Hunter found themselves up by a commanding 41-18.
Despite a much more even second half, Hunter's lead was never threatened. The Hawks held strong as their lead never dropped below 20 points.
Luka Jakic ended the scoring, sinking his try from the free throw line to bring the Hawks to the 75 point mark.
Up next, the Hawks return to action on Friday, January 31st when they face the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College in a road contest. The Hawks will look to avenge their 55-65 loss to Brooklyn earlier this month. Tip-off is set for 7pm.
