Men's Basketall Falls Short At York, 82-76

George Keener notched a season high 30 points in the loss

Jamaica, NY - The men's basketball team suffered an 82-76 on Saturday afternoon to CUNYAC foe York College. The loss brings the team to a 1-10 record, 1-2 CUNYAC while the Cardinals move to 4-8, 1-2 CUNYAC.

Keener highlighted the offense with a game and season high 30 points on an efficient 10-16 shooting from the field and an 8-9 performance from the charity stripe. Gio Gabbidon added 17 points and grabbed eight misses while teammate Jonah Bevacqua chipped in with 15 points on 6-9 shooting. As a team, the Hawks had 12 steals and forced 22 York turnovers.

Each team in the first half played very evenly and shot over 53 percent from the floor. While the Hawks sank two more field goals than the hosts, York made it to the free throw line an impressive 18 times and connected on 11 of those attempts. There were seven ties, 15 lead changes, and either team lead by more than six points at any given time. Hunter's largest lead of the half came at the 16:01 mark after a layup by Benvacqua made the score 12-7. York fired back with a jumper from Jean-Luc Etienne at the 9:57 mark to go up six; their largest advantage. The see-saw half concluded with a tip in from Akil Vaugn to make it a 45-44 York lead at the half.

In the second, Hunter went cold in the early stages, falling victim to an 11-0 run and then a seperate 8-0 run shortly after to find themselves down by eight with 4:11 left to play. Back-to-back free throws from Bevacqua and Keener put Hunter within three points with 41 second left, but it's as close as they would get. York managed to sink three of their four final foul shots down the stretch to seal the deal.

The Hawks are back in action Monday, January 6 when they host Brooklyn College in a CUNYAC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm.
