Jamaica, NY - The women's basketball racked up their fifth win over their last six contests after defeating York College by a score of 57-46 this past Saturday afternoon.
Despite the low scoring affair, Hunter's
Janine Conway still managed 16 points while
Phoebe Valenton added 10 in the win.
Maya Thompson was a bucket away from a double-double after pulling down an even split of 12 rebounds and adding eight points. The Purple and Gold had scoring contributions from nine different players, had 10 steals, forced 27 York turnovers, and dished out 18 assists.
It was a see-saw affair in the first half with York (4-7, 1-2 CUNYAC) leading for the majority of the first quarter. A Conway jumper at the 2:41 mark pulled the Hawks (6-5, 3-0 CUNYAC) even with the Cardinals at 8-8 which was part of a 12-2 run that eventually set the score at 15-10 in favor of Hunter at the close of the first.
York did not go away easily as they tied the game twice in the second quarter and went ahead 20-17 after a made layup from Destiny Drummond at the 4:57 mark. However, it was the last time the hosts would score in the quarter, going 0-7 from the field and turning the ball over four times. Hunter capitalized and scored 10 unanswered points, book-ended with a deuce and a triple from Conway and giving her team a 27-20 lead at the half.
In the third, York was able to pull within two but another 10-0 Hunter run gave them a 12 point cushion; their largest lead of the quarter. It proved to be enough to hold off the hosts. In the fourth, the Cardinals would get no closer than within eight points as Hunter sealed the deal with their sixth win of the season.
Next up, Hunter will host Brooklyn College on Monday, January 6 in a rematch of last year's CUNYAC Championship. Tip-off is slated for 5pm.
