New York, NY – The men's basketball struggled this evening, being defeating by the College of Staten Island, 67-59. The Hawks used a 29 point third quarter to break the halftime knot and held off the charging Dolphins down the stretch in the final seconds. The win puts the Purple and Gold back over .500 at 7-6 and remain at 3-1 in CUNYAC action.
Jonah Bevacqua and
George Keener each registered a double-double, combining for an even split of 48 points and accounting for 23 of their squad's 47 boards. As a team, they forced 13 turnovers, had four blocks and eight steals.
Their struggles started in the first half after going just 6-29 and coming up blank on their 13, three-point attempts. Despite the offense not firing on all cylinders, the Hawks found themselves down by just nine points heading into halftime, 26-17.
The second was a whole new ballgame. The offense found their stroke and as a team,
John Pelin's team shot 50 percent from the floor, making 17 field goals. Hunter trailed by as much as 15 at one point and were chasing a double digit deficit for most of the half. A late 6-0 made it a six point affair with 36 seconds left to play, but it wound up being too little too late.
The Hawks return to the court on Friday, January 10 when they travel to the Bronx to compete against the Lightning of Lehman College. Tip-off is scheduled for a 7pm start.
*The game against CSI is not counted toward a CUNYAC contest due to the reclassification of the Dolphins transitioning into Division II
