Collins’ Last Second Heroics Propels Men’s Hoops To 76-75 Win over CSI

Hunter has won six of their last seven games.

Staten Island, NY – The men's basketball team came away with a 76-75 come-from-behind victory thanks to a last second shot from Melvin Collins. The victory marks the team's eighth win over the last 10 games as they seem to have found their rhythm when it matters. The Hawks better their record to 9-14 overall and remain at 7-5 in CUNYAC play*.

A career evening from Judah McIntyre helped the squad stay close throughout the game. The freshman guard dropped 22 points on an efficient 8-11 shooting from the field while tacking on a 5-8 performance from the charity stripe. Gio Gabbidon shot fifty percent from the floor en route to scoring 18 points while Danny Fusco went 6-12 for 14 points.

In an evenly played first half that had four ties and just three lead changes, it was the hosts that lead for the majority of the 20 minutes. At the 15:16 mark, Fusco made good on a jumper to give Hunter a two point lead, but they would play from behind for the remainder of the half. Hunter fell behind by as much as eight points, but trailed by just two heading into halftime.

The Dolphins quickly built an eight point lead, but the Hawks kept them at bay through the efforts of Jonah Bevacqua and Gabbidon to bring it back to a one point affair. McIntyre's layup at the 9:27 mark gave Hunter a two point lead midway through the second act. With a tick over two minutes left to play, CSI's Adeola Latunji's layup knotted the game at 69. Down the stretch, the Purple and Gold found themselves up against the ropes; down two with 11 seconds left. However, as he has done in the past, Collins came up huge for his team and knocked down the game winning three pointer with just two seconds left to secure the victory for his team.

Up next, the Hawks will take on the City College of New York on Saturday, February 15 at 7pm. It will be their final road game of the regular season.

*Due to CSI's reclassification to Division II, the game will not count toward CUNYAC records.
