Women's Hoops Suffers 77-58 Loss to Staten Island

Hunter has one road and one home game left on the regular season schedule.

Staten Island, NY – The women's basketball team suffered a 77-58 loss earlier this evening to the Dolphins of Staten Island. In defeat, Hunter moves to 13-10 overall and remains at 9-3 in CUNYAC play*.

Hunter was led by Janine Conway who scored 11 points in 29 minutes of action. Phoebe Valenton added 10 points on 4-10 shooting from the floor and added two steals in the loss. Maya Thompson posted a solid defensive effort on the evening, grabbing nine boards, blocking three shots and earning two steals.

Hunter took an early 5-0 lead which would wind up being their largest lead of the game. However, the hosts scored nine unanswered points over a span of three minutes to take a seven point advantage at the 3:05 mark. A fast break layup by Diana Todaro gave CSI a 20-12 lead at the end of the first.

The Purple and Gold quickly made it a one point game after opening the second on a 7-0 run capped with a layup from Kristina Krslovic, but the Dolphins responded swiftly with a 7-0 run of their own to make it an eight point affair once again. Morgan Gress knocked down a triple to spark a closing 7-0 run once again to set the score at 27-26 at the half in favor of the hosts.

Things go rough in the third as CSI found their stroke. They built a lead that extended to as much as nine points thanks to two made free throws from Todaro and headed into the fourth and final quarter up by seven points. There, the deficit ballooned to as much as 22 which proved too much for the Hawks to overcome as they settled for the 77-58 loss.

Up next, the Hawks will take on the City College of New York on Saturday, February 15 at 5pm. It will be their final road game of the regular season.

*Due to CSI's reclassification to Division II, the game will not count toward CUNYAC records.
