New York- The Hunter College men's soccer team defeated John Jay College at home Wednesday afternoon, 2-0, to close out regular season play.
The Hawks (4-9, 4-4 CUNYAC) shut down the Bloodhounds (3-10, 2-5 CUNYAC) at Randall's Island ahead of the conference post-season tournament. For the second consecutive game, senior
Blaise Enama netted a goal for Hunter. A defensive steal in front of the Hawks' net by
Regis Enama lead to an up field kick to
Sammy Ahmed as he assisted B. Enama's fourth goal of the season in the bottom left corner of the net, slipping past the Bloodhounds' keeper.
The Purple and Gold would continue to perform on the defensive side of the ball. With just 4:30 left the in half, keeper
Antony Simos made a diving save on a one touch, lower left shot. With 2:09 to go, he again blocked a notably hard shot in a one-on-one with John Jay's forward, knocking it out of bounds. That led to a corner kick where senior,
Matthew Maja, defended the receiver perfectly to block the shot and keep Bloodhounds scoreless as the first half came to an end.
The Hawks remained up by one until the 66th minute when a red card on the John Jay keeper lead to a direct kick. Stand out freshman,
Bradley Espejo, took the kick and netted his third goal of the season, pushing Hunter's lead to two. Again, the defense would step up as Maja made another impressive block, sliding in front of his opponent to cancel out an open shot with 16 minutes left to play. In the 83rd minute, Simos logged another impressive play as he blocked a hard shot and caught the follow up to shutdown John Jay, 2-0.
Simos logged nine saves in the win, his second highest of the season, while
Mikael Young-Malka, B. Enama, Ahmed, and Espejo would all record multiple shots.
The Hawks finish their season ranked fourth in conference play as the team awaits seeding for the CUNYAC post-season tournament. Check back here or at
