Women's Tennis Bounces #3 John Jay in CUNYAC Semis; Advances to Finals

The Hawks will play for the conference title against Baruch on Thursday

BOX SCORE Bronx, NY - On Wednesday evening, the #2 women's tennis team took on the #4 seeded Bloodhounds of John Jay College in the semi-final round of the 2021 CUNYAC Championship Tournament. As with post-season rules, the match was called after the Hawks were ahead by 5-0 to grab the victory and secure their spot in the conference championship.

The Hawks swept the doubles portion of the match to go up 3-0 early on. Hunter's top doubles team comprised of CUNYAC All-Stars Zaara Afida and Liliko Chung took care of their opponents and came away with the 8-4 win. Meanwhile, Angelina Cantania and Yana Rabkova did their part with an 8-3 performance at second doubles over their challengers. Rounding out the doubles sweep was the tandem of Mia Chan and Lily O'Heir. The pair followed suit with a winning score of 8-4.

The Purple and Gold needed just two wins in singles play to cement the win and they did just that. Affida took care of Kayla Hankey in straight sets at top flight singles, 6-1 and 6-4, to grab the first win. Finishing up was Catania who improved on her impressive season record, taking down Briana Schmidt in convincing fashion, 6-2, 6-0.

Hunter will attempt to defend their CUNYAC title when they face top seeded Baruch College on Thursday at the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is slated for a 3pm start and will be streamed live via Facebook.
