Kings Point, NY – The women's volleyball team closed their regular season earlier this afternoon with a non-conference matchup at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Despite facing a 2-0 deficit, the Hawks came back to force a fifth set but were unable to come out on top. The loss brings their record to 11-12 as they head into the post-season.
Offensively, Hunter had six girls with at least three kills and were led by
Beverly Wong and
Mariapaz Lojano with eight apiece.
Justine Smith was on setting duties and registered 26 assist. The Purple and Gold were impressive on the defensive end with five grabbing double digit digs, led by
Erin Hyman with 24. Additionally, they collectively totaled 18 block assists and two block solos with
Pearl Mensah accounting for six block assists.
Hunter led late in the first, 23-19, but four host kills mixed in with two service aces quickly flipped the momentum and made it a 1-0 affair in favor of USMMA. Their lead extended with the Purple and Gold were unable to find a rhythm in the second, playing from behind from the get-go and unable to get back in it.
However, they faced set point in the third at 24-20. USMMA managed to knot the set at 24 apiece but committed two errors over the final two points to give Hunter their first set win. In the fourth, facing a 15-14 deficit, Hunter rattled off six unanswered points that ultimately powered them through to the end with
Mariam Ouattara putting down the final kill to force a fifth.
With a fifth set tie at the 6-6 mark, an 8-1 host run proved to be the deciding factor in the game. Hunter was unable to recover and ultimately fell 15-9.
