Patchogue, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's basketball team fell in its season opener against St. Joseph's College Long Island on Wednesday evening, 96-53.
The Hawks (0-1) started the first quarter going point-for-point with the Golden Eagles (1-0), with jump shots by returners Kimberly Lau and Morgan Gress. Nia Chung grabbed a defensive board and brought it back for a layup before the non-conference opponent went on a 13-point run. Chung broke the pattern with another layup followed by a point at the line as the Purple and Gold trailed 29-9 to close out the first quarter.
The Hawks performed better in the second period, tacking on an additional 22 points including a three by Nina Henessey, but we unable to overcome the Golden Eagles as they headed into halftime in a 49-31 deficit.
St. Joseph's started the second half with another double-digit run, cut off by a three from Eliah Yode. Despite nine points in the final quarter of play by Erin Cosio, the Hawks were unable to overcome the Golden Eagles and ultimately fell, 96-53.
Hunter looks to grab its first win at its home opener Saturday, Nov. 13 against St. Joseph's Brooklyn. Tip-off is slated for noon at the Hunter Sportsplex.
