New York- The Hunter College women's basketball team took down Saint Joseph's College Brooklyn in it's home opener on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks (1-1) garnered their first win of the season in an impressive 85-69 finish over the Bears (0-2). Three starters finished with 14 points each in the contest in Kaite Burke,
Nia Chung, and
Kimberly Lau , while an additional two logged double-digit games. Chung put together an impressive six rebounds, two blocks, and went 6-7 from the line in the win. Off the bench,
Kailey Marrero and
Eliah Yode recorded 11 and 10 points, respectively.Â
Hunter trailed until the final minute of the first quarter when a jumper in the paint by Burke put them ahead by one. The Bears were quick to respond with a basket of their own and the Hawks entered the second period behind a point. Coming out with renewed energy, the Hawks went on an eight-point run to start the second quarter, leading 31-22. With minimal points in between, Hunter would go on another eight and one 10-point run to conclude the half leading 51-30, holding St. Joseph's to just eight points for the period.Â
The Purple and Gold continued to dominate, as it led the entirety of the second half, tacking on an additional 34 points to outlast the visitors, 85-69.
Hunter returns to the court for another home contest against FDU-Florham on Wednesday night. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.Â
