New York- In a thrilling over time battle, the Hunter College men's basketball team fell to SUNY Canton, 126-114 at home on Thursday afternoon.
Ryan Lau dropped 31 points, six from behind the arc in addition to grabbing four rebounds and three steals. Lau recorded career-highs in almost all categories with his impressive performance, despite the team's loss.
The Hawks (4-6, 1-5 CUNYAC) trailed for almost the entirety of the first period of play, entering halftime in a 58-48 deficit, despite eight made three's and shooting 70% from the line.
Hunter prevailed in the second half, after the Kangaroos made a layup in the opening seconds, the home team responded with a 12-0 run to take the lead, 61-60. From there, the two teams battled it out with seven more lead changes in the half. The Hawks pulled away with an eight point lead with 2:42 left on the clock. Canton slowly crept back and a buzzer three sent the game into overtime at a 107 stalemate.
The Hawks recorded seven points in overtime compared to the visitors' 19 and ultimately fell, 126-114, to the nonconference opponent.Â
Overall, the Purple and Gold out-shot Canton from beyond the arc, 19-14 in addition to shooting 73% from the foul line over the Kangaroos' 66.7%.
Four other Hawks put up doube-digits for the day including
Luka Jakic with 12 points and 13 rebounds for yet another double-double. Freshman standout,
Jeremy Montrose also put together a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Cormac Reilly and
Raheem Bakary were also amongst top scorers, knocking down 18 and 15 points, respectively.
Hunter will resume play in the new year on Jan. 7 at Lehman College. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. for the conference contest.
