Flushing, NY – The women's tennis team scored their first conference victory with a 8-1 win over CUNYAC rival John Jay earlier this afternoon. The victory advanced the Hawks to 3-1 overall and a 1-0 mark in league action.
Each of the three doubles duos won their respective matches.
Zaara Afida and
Angelina Catania had the largest margin of victory over their John Jay challengers at #1 doubles, 8-1 while
Yana Rabkova and
Liliko Chung came out on top, 8-3 at #2 doubles. Finishing the sweep was
Lily O'Heir and
Marcia Postrygacz who defeated the Bloodhound's Jasmin Vargas and Dakota Himaya by a score of 8-5.
With a comfortable 3-0 lead, Afida added to the cushion by making quick work of her opponent at top flight singles, 6-0, 6-2. Rabkova received a challenge from Briana Schmidt, but gave the Hawks yet another victory after sets of 6-4, 7-5. At #3 singles, Catania was nearly perfect over Sarina Moi, 6-0, 6-1 while Postrygacz, at #6 singles, added the penultimate tally to the Hawk's win column with a 6-2, 6-0 performance. Chung split the first two sets with Himaya, trading 6-4 scores, and ultimately came out on top with a 10-7 decision in the tie breaker. John Jay was able to grab their lone win at #5 singles with Nikhar Rathi taking down
Julia Winer, 6-3, 6-3.
The women's tennis squad returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 25 when they at Lehman College. First serve is slated for a 12 p.m. start.
