New York- The Hunter College men's soccer team dropped its conference opener after a hard fought battle against York College Wednesday afternoon at Randall's Island.
The Hawks (0-7, 0-1 CUNYAC) fell 2-1 to York College (1-2-1, 1-0 CUNYAC). The Cardinals netted the first goal in the fourth minute with a top left corner shot to take the lead early on. The visitors' second goal of the match came in the 21st minute off of a corner kick. Down by two the Hawks fought back taking four shots in the minutes that followed until a foul by York in the box set Sammy Ahmed up for a penalty kick. The kick would be good as Ahmed scored Hunter's lone goal of the game in the 31st minute. Both teams remained silent for the remainder of the period, heading to halftime 2-1.
The second half would come and go scoreless but not quietly. The Hawks dominated possession in the period with an impressive 15 shots. Despite standout foot skills by Blaise Enama and a valiant effort by sophomore Mikael Young-Malka, the Purple and Gold were unable to finish and ended the game in a one goal deficit.
Overall, Hunter outshot York 33-4 with 13 shots on goal by four players in Josh IIyadzhanov, Young-Malka, B. Enama, and Ahmed.
Hunter looks to lock in its first win Saturday (Oct. 2) on the road against CUNYAC opponent Brooklyn College. Kick-off is slated for 12 p.m.
