New York- The Hunter College men's basketball team won its third consecutive game at home on Friday evening with a 111-99 victory over The City College of New York.
The win advances the Hawks to 4-3 in conference and 8-8 overall, while the Beavers drop to 5-10 and 1-10 in the City University of New York Athletic Conference.
Gene Propper led the team with a 22 point and 10 rebound double, including five three pointers. Luka Jakic logged his second consecutive double-double as he scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the night. Jeremy Montrose also had a great night with 17 points and a career-high seven steals in the win.
The visitors got on the board first but Hunter was quick to answer and took the lead in the 18th minute off of a three from Montrose. The two teams exchanged points as the score tied five separate times until Hunter went on a 9-0 run to lead, 28-21. The Beavers were able to make their way back and eventually overcame the deficit with six minutes to go in the half and held that lead for the remainder of the period, sending the Hawks to the locker room trailing 49-46.
The Hawks fought back in the second half of play with an 11-0 run to start. The Purple and Gold held that lead for the remainder of the game, leading by as much as 18 on two separate occasions to eventually overwhelm the Beavers and take how their third straight conference win.
Overall, Hunter recorded 12 threes, a stark difference between CCNY's three. They also forced 31 turnovers and out rebounded its opponent, 58-55.
The Hawks return to the court on Jan. 25 for a road rematch against Lehman College. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
