Glassboro, N.J.- The Hunter College women's basketball team split a tri-match this weekend to close out regular season play. Hunter started the day strong with a 3-1 win over Nazareth, but dropped the second competition against Salisbury 3-0. The Hawks record moves to 18-9 overall for the regular season, while remaining a perfect 7-0 in conference play.
Tionna Moss led the team a combined total of 23 kills for both matches, while Izabella Williams added 18 in addition to 17 from
Mariam Ouattara. On the defensive side of the ball, Nadia Lau came up big with 34 digs. Once again, freshman standout, Bethany Tomaneng stood out posting 53 assists.
In the first match against Nazareth, the Golden Flyer kept the game close but Hunter was able to overcome and took set 1, 25-22. The seond set saw a back and forth and despite three staight aces from Tomeneng, which would contribute to her season-high of five in this match alone, the Purple and Gold was unable to hold on and Nazareth took the second set, 26-24. Hunter then closed out the victory with 25-21 and 25-23 scores in the final two sets. Ouattara and
Erin Dugan added 4 kills a piece to render the Hawks to victory with Ouattara added the blocks plus two each from Williams and Liliana Khidir.
Against Salisbury, the Hawks had an uphill battle. The first set featured big runs by both sides. The Hawks flipped a 13-9 hole into a 15-13 advantage with six straight points including a pair of aces by Lau and two kills from
Mariapaz Lojano. The back and forth continued but the Seagulls came out on top, finishing set 1 28-26. Hunter led for almost the entirety of the second set, until the very end when Salisbury logged five straight points to go up 2-1 with a 25-21 win. Salisbury ended Hunter's day early taking set 3, 25-20 for a final score of 3-0. The Haws managed 35 kills against 17 errors on 107 swings, good for a .168 hitting percentage.
Hunter returns to the court for the CUNYAC tournament on Thursday Nov. 3. Seeding is still TBA.
