New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's volleyball team swept John Jay, 3-0, in the first game of the Hawks' annual trimatch this afternoon.
The Hawks (11-3, 3-0 CUNYAC) dominated for the first two sets, finishing at 25-15 and 25-13 ,respectively. The Bulldogs put up a fight in the final set but Hunter didn't let up, and closed out the match with a 25-23 win in set three.
Lily Mattison posted an impressive 12 kills in the match to aid the Hawks in two of their 10 point leads for the first set. John Jay was plagued with ball handling errors in the second set as the Hawks would again lead by 10 or more.
The third set saw the Hawks once again jump out to a quick lead, but five consecutive points by the visitors put the Bulldogs within range. John Jay took it's only lead of the match at 23-22 but the Purple and Gold fought back to score the final three points consecutively including a kill from
Beverly Wong to close out play.
Bethany Tomaneng continued to shine as led the team with 26 assists.
Nadia Lau also played an integral part in the win, with a trio of aces and 13 digs.
The Hawks return to the court on Oct. 11 as they host local rival NYU in the Sportsplex.
