Men's Basketball Posts 126-118 Win Against Centenary

Hackettstown, N.J.- In their first game of the Centenary Tournament, the Hunter College men's basketball team posted at 126-118 win on the road over the hosting Cyclones.

The win marks the Hawks' (3-7, 0-1 CUNYAC) highest points scored this season and the team's second consecutive win, featuring double-digit points from six student-athletes, lead by Luka Jakic with another double-double, as he scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Also with 17 points was starter, Ryan Lau, who went 6-9 from the field and 4-7 beyond the arc. Jeremy Montrose was also a large factor, as he put up 16 points, including three threes and had a season high five steals in the win.

Hunter created 28 points off turnovers and nine different Hawks recorded steals in the game, in addition to 63 bench pointed compared to the Cyclones' 26.

As the game started, the two teams seemed to be evenly matched, with no more than one possession ever separating the score until 4:54 when a steal from Montrose gave Enzo Caceres-Roussel the open lane as Hunter went up 41-35. The Hawks were able to stay on top for the remainder of the half, going up by as much as eight on two separate occasions. With both teams headed to the locker room for an intermission, Hunter held a 54-48 lead over Centenary.

The Hawks came out aggressive in the second half of play, immediately establishing a double-digit lead. They were able to stay on top, separating themselves by as much as 27 with 11 minutes to play as Montrose scored off of an assist from Jakic, 93-66.

The Cyclones kept pushing and with under five minutes to play, Hunter was up by only single digits for the first time since the start of the second half. Despite coming within three in two instances, Hunter had a burst of energy, responding with a 7-0 run to seal the Cyclones' fate and ultimately win, 126-118.

The Hawks are set to play William Paterson tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. as the tournament continues, while Centenary and St. Joseph's Brooklyn will face off at noon.
