Jamaica, NY - The women's basketball team outlasted the Cardinals of York College in a tightly contested game on Friday evening. Hunter out-scored the hosts each quarter and it was close nearly the entire way, but it was Hunter who came away with the 57-48 victory at the end. The win moves the Hawks to 7-13 overall and 4-6 in league play.
The offense was led by Kristina Krslovic whose effort resulted in 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Nia Chung add 11 points with help from a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe while teammate Katie Burke chipped in with 10 points. Defensively, the Purple and Gold recorded 15 steals, forced 29 turnovers, and held their opponent to just 37 percent shooting from the floo
York led for a majority of the first quarter, but it was the three ball that kept the Hawks close. They sunk four in a row with the final one coming from Nina Hennessy to go up by two. On the quarter's final possession, Burke made good on a jumper to give her team the 20-16 lead
The four point advantage grew to as much as eight in the second quarter after Krslovic knocked down a three pointer with 3:24 showing on the clock. Two made free throws from York's Mac-Dege DesSources sent the game into the half with Hunter up 35-30
The Hawks were held scoreless for the first 6:15 of the third while York scored six unanswered to take the lead. A three from Erin Cosmo finally broke the silence. With under a minute left in the quarter, an and-one from Chung and a layup from Burke put the Hawks back on top 47-4
The Cardinal's DesSources recorded a layup with 5:35 showing on the clock, but it wound up being the teams's final point as they went cold dim the floor, leaving the door open for the Hawks to extend their lead down the stretch. The end result was a 57-48 Hunter win
